A Friendship Neglected

Michael Johns

He was new

Transferred from another school

Trying hard to fit in.

I had seen him around.

In a class we shared

In the cafeteria.

Walking across the parking lot.

But I didn't know him.

So that afternoon

When he passed me in the crowded hall

And said hello

I somehow felt awkward,

And I turned my head.

As if I hadn't seen him.

But he knew.

And I felt the distance between us grow.

The next time I saw him

In the middle of that hall

He turned his head first

And looked away.

The distance between us grew greater.

Now I wonder

What sort of friendship

Might have formed.

Had I looked his way

And returned his greeting.

What if I had said hello?

I may never know.

Because when I see him

He turns his head

And I look away

The distance between us grows even more.
