I Have a Song to Sing

By: Leslie Love

I have a song to sing.

Not just any song, not just any tune, not just any words for any rhyme;

I have a certain song to sing.

See, I’m singing the song of my friend.

She taught it to me in the first days, weeks and months of our relationship.

She taught me every word, beat and cord.

I know how to sing the high parts and I know how to sing the low parts.

I know where the keys change and I know exactly what words rhyme with each other.

I especially know how the underlying beat sounds.

We sang her song in perfect harmony and now…

Now it’s just me singing.

Singing the song of my friend.

And I’m singing now because she seems to have forgotten how it goes.

See, she can’t remember the words very well, and she can’t seem to find the right cords.

She is singing a little off key.

She is also handling the high and low parts a bit differently; using means I don’t particularly agree with.

Her words no longer rhyme like they used to, and some of them have even been left out.

The underlying beat…well, the underlying beat is very peculiar.

See, it remains the same, it hasn’t changed at all.

Perhaps that is because my friend hasn’t REALLY changed.

She’s been going through some tough times lately.

I guess that anyone growing up and experiencing the world will forget how their song goes.

I guess that’s what my friend did.

So, my friend forgot her song.

That’s OK, as long as I know her song.

As long as I know which high and low parts to sing, which keys change and which words rhyme.

As long as I know her song, my friend will too.

See, I’m going to sing my friend’s song; Loud and Clear.

And once my friend hears her song over and over again, she’ll join in.

I know that when we sing again some words will be changed, but they’ll rhyme.

And some high and low parts will be handled differently, but that’s because we are growing.

At least one day we’ll sing once again in perfect harmony.

For now though, I have a song to sing.

Not just any song, not just any rhyme, and not just any words for any rhyme.

I have a certain song to sing.

See, I’m singing the song of my friend.
