What You Gave Me

In pain, you taught me the true meaning of love.
In leaving, you taught me how to be strong.
In caring, you taught me that it's not always enough.
In love, you taught me to put myself first.

You made me test my own love…it's unconditional still.
You made me test my own strength…it's limited, but there.
You made me test my own soul…it's jaded, innocence lost.
You made me test my self-confidence…now I can love myself, too.

So I guess I'm writing to thank you.
Thank you for making me prove that I really do love you.
Thank you for making me prove that I can survive.
Thank you for making me prove that love isn't always enough.
Thank you for making me prove that I am worth something.

But I can't thank you for killing my trust in you.
I can't say everything is fine.
I love you and that is forever, my friend,
But I told you once and it's still true
I give you my trust free once, as my friend,
The second time you have to earn it and you didn't care enough to try.
